Bruxism

Teeth Clenching and Grinding

In today’s fast pace world, we are inundated with various stresses; driving to work, not being late for an appointment, picking up the children on time from school. Unfortunately, individuals may react to stress by grinding their teeth subconsciously during the day or, more commonly, while sleeping.

It is called bruxism, a multifactorial condition that can be painful and uncomfortable. The constant pressure and motion can cause chipped teeth, cracked fillings, loose teeth, tooth pain, excessive wear, jaw and neck pain, muscle fatigue and may contribute to TMJ problems.

Our goal is to treat the wear and discomfort at an early stage so it is not allowed to progress to a severe condition. Dr. Cannilla offers several conservative solutions, including bite splints, nightguards, and bite therapies to reduce bruxism and relieve discomfort.

In addition to helping relieve head, neck, jaw joint and shoulder pains, treating bruxism is cost effective compared to ignoring the condition and exposing teeth to continued grinding. If early intervention is ignored, root canals, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures are often needed to repair or replace worn and damaged teeth.
